Customs clearance formalities in Australia can be complex and daunting, so experienced importers appoint a reputable Customs Broker to act on their behalf, on an ongoing basis.
Colless Young is a qualified Customs Broker with a wealth of knowledge and experience to guide you in navigating the complexities of customs regulations, and ensuring a smooth experience when importing cargo into Australia.
The company has been a Licenced Customs Brokerage since its establishment in 1980, and our experienced in-house licensed brokers are available to provide professional advice on all customs and quarantine requirements.
We are members of the two main industry representative bodies, Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and the International Forwarders & Customs Brokers Association of Australia (IFCBAA). Our brokers remain up to date through continued professional development programs so we can provide the most current advice.
Customs clearance is the official process of getting your imported goods approved by the Australian Border Force (ABF) before they can be released for domestic use. When you engage the services of Colless Young as your Customs Broker, we take great care in submitting accurate documentation, paying any applicable duties and taxes (such as GST), and ensuring your goods comply with all relevant regulations.
With an enviable compliance record of our own, Colless Young is dedicated to ensuring our clients minimise their duty and tax exposure, while remaining fully compliant with all import/export regulations.
Most imports require the lodgement of a customs entry, declaring specific details about the contents of the cargo. Goods are classified according to the internationally recognised Harmonized System (HS) of tariff nomenclature. This system enables authorities worldwide to identify and categorise goods for tax and regulatory purposes.
Once goods are correctly classified, we calculate the applicable taxes, duties, and excises that must be paid. Various Free Trade Agreements, by-laws and concessions, potentially eliminating customs duties, are taken into consideration.
Clearance through Government Departments including Biosecurity
There are many government departments and agencies whose regulations affect trade to and from Australia, and with new legislation coming into force regularly it is recommended to check with us before importing any products for the first time, to avoid being caught unawares by any new requirements that could result in additional costs.
Another critical aspect of a broker’s role is an in-depth understanding of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) quarantine/biosecurity regulations. Many commodities have biosecurity restrictions which may involve import permits, health certificates or manufacturing declarations and potentially require inspections/treatments at the destination.
We advise on whether your products will require cleaning or treatment at the point of origin, streamlining biosecurity clearance at the destination. Additionally, all products delivered to a rural destination in Australia will require biosecurity “tailgate” inspection, which we can arrange for you.
The customs clearance process can appear overwhelming at first, but we are here to facilitate the process, allowing you to plan your deliveries with confidence. Our aim is to keep you compliant with all government departments’ regulations while at the same time ensuring you don’t pay them any more than you have to. We are committed to excellent customer service and our staff are readily available to answer your questions and provide regular updates on your shipment’s status.
