The CMA CGM Estelle has arrived in Australia breaking records at 300m long, weighing 95,256 tonnes and carrying almost 11,000 TEU. Estelle has nabbed the top spot as the ship carrying the greatest number of containers to ever visit Australia – with 10,926 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent) shipping containers on board. The previous record was set by the CMA CGM Ural in 2020, which had 10,662 containers.
Thousands of containers loaded with goods like clothing, white goods, furniture, electronics and machinery were offloaded from the vessel over 24 hours, before it departed Port Botany today and headed south to Melbourne.
CMA CGM Estelle is deployed on the NEMO Australia Express Service between Europe, the Indian Ocean and Australia, which is a joint service by MSC and CMA CGM. It is a Container Ship built in 2018 (4 years old) and currently sailing under the flag of Malta.
The ship is berthed at Patrick Terminals which have the largest ship-to-shore cranes in Australia.
Michael Jovicic, CEO of Patrick Terminals, said, “CMA CGM Estelle is an impressive sight alongside our Patrick Terminals quay line being worked upon by the largest ship-to-shore cranes in Australia. Patrick Terminals has invested significantly to accommodate the next generation of larger container vessels and is well equipped to service these ships.”
“These large container vessels are the vessels of the future and Patrick Terminals has invested significantly with cranes, infrastructure and automation to efficiently service this next generation of large ships,” he said.
Estelle’s arrival was a showcase for Port Botany’s capabilities – like the deep-water shipping channel and premier infrastructure facilities that enable the port to service vessels of this scale.
The length of the CMA CGM Estelle is equivalent to about three football fields.
