Operated by Maersk Line, the Ilse Wulff is 306 metres long and 40 metres wide, and can carry more than 6,900 shipping containers, including 500 refrigerated boxes. It has a Gross Tonnage of 75604t and Deadweight of 85622 t. PBPL (Port of Brisbane)’s Trade Development Manager, Andrew Brinkworth and Marketing Communication Advisor, Katrina Galea met the vessel and presented the Captain and officers with a plaque to commemorate the visit.
Maersk Line operates the largest container carrying vessels in the world, with some of them exceeding 400 metres in length. Vessels longer than 300 metres (about the width of the Brisbane River) cannot venture any further than Fishermans Island at the river’s mouth, otherwise they would not be able to turn around. Unfortunately, that restriction also includes passenger cruise ships.
The Port of Brisbane has 29 operating berths including nine deep-water container berths and three deep-water bulk berths as well as 17 bulk and general cargo berths. In total the port facilitates more than 2,600 ships each year and transports more than 28 million tonnes of cargo each year.
