We have received notification from container terminal operators about additional “Protected Industrial Action (PIA)” by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the current delays being experienced.
The MUA has placed additional protected industrial action on Patrick Terminals Melbourne specifically. Due to the current circumstances in Melbourne with Covid-19, it is expected that this industrial action will leave significant impacts on Melbourne’s economy.
At this current time, the direct impacts on terminals around Australia are:
Patrick Terminals – Melbourne
– A ban on the performance of overtime at East Swanson Dock (Melbourne) commencing at 12:01am Saturday 19 June 2021 until 12:01am Saturday 26 June 2021.
– A ban on the working of shift extensions at East Swanson Dock (Melbourne) commencing at 12:01am Saturday 19 June 2021 until 12:01am Saturday 26 June 2021.
Hutchison Ports – Sydney
All employees of Sydney International Container Terminals Pty Ltd t/a Hutchison Ports Australia Pty Ltd who will be covered by the proposed enterprise agreement, who are employed at its operations at Port Botany, and who are members of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union – The Maritime Union of Australia Division, will engage in the following actions:
– A stoppage of work of 24 hours duration, commencing 06:00 Saturday 12th to 06:00 Sunday 13th June 2021
– A stoppage of work of 24 hours duration, commencing 23:59 Monday 14th to 23:59 Tuesday 15th June 2021.
Patrick Terminals – Sydney AutoStrad
Patrick Sydney AutoStrad terminal will incur extended industrial action throughout the month of June.
– Sydney terminal delays are now approx. 4 days.
– Some vessels are experiencing longer delays and with ongoing industrial action, delays for vessels arriving at the terminal are expected to increase.
– Two vessels have already been sub-contracted and further opportunities are being explored for subcontracting of vessels.
Patrick Terminals – Brisbane AutoStrad
Terminal operations are now as normal.
Patrick Terminals – Fremantle
Fremantle terminal delays remain at approx. 2 days
The new industrial action notifications will impact the availability of labour for Patrick Terminals around the nation.  A statement issued by them says, “Patrick Terminals is proactively working towards a fair and reasonable arrangement for all parties with the regular engagement of MUA representatives both at a local and national level.â€
