Film Records 50 Years of Containerisation

Shipping containers made their first appearance in the 1960s, and the founders of Colless Young Pty Ltd were just starting out in their careers as the sixties rolled into the seventies and Australia made the transtition from the old breakbulk shipping methods to containerisation.

On 22nd October 2019, a short film celebrating fifty years of international container services into Australia, called World in a Box, was launched by the Minister for Trade Tourism and Investment. Senator Simon Birmingham, who is interviewed in the documentary, praises the growth of Australian trade which has expanded hand in hand with the rise of containerisation.

This video provides some history of the shipping container, including the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Encounter Bay in 1969, being the first international door-to-door container service in Australia. It also provides a look at the future of shipping, with advances in technology, as well as efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of container vessels as they increase in size and capacity.

World in a Box was an undertaking of the 2019 Container Project Committee, which is a group of former senior Australian shipping executives who are keen to celebrate this important milestone.
