One of the first major air hubs to be affected will be Miami International Airport (MIA) where more than half the average daily flight schedule has already been cancelled.
Seaports across the Caribbean and South Florida are also preparing to close.
United Airlines Cargo has expanded its cargo restrictions to include Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and Orlando International Airport (MCO), saying that, as of Saturday, restrictions will include all freight, mail and PetSafe transport at Tampa International Airport (TPA), and by Sunday all products except non-perishable GEN freight and mail will be restricted to and from TPA.
At Delta Cargo, similar restrictions are in place across all cargo products handled by the carrier in Florida. In addition to the southern operations at MIA, MCO, TPA and Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Delta is shutting down cargo ops at Fort Myers (RSW), Melbourne (MLB), Palm Beach (PBI), and Sarasota (SRQ).
American Airlines Cargo has added JAX to its embargo list, but says that operations in San Juan (SJU) are back.
Elsewhere in the Caribbean, all cargo operations are offline until further notice at Antigua, Anguilla, Barbuda, Nassau (Bahamas), Providenciales (Turks and Caicos), St. Kitts, St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands) and St. Martin.
Next up will be Hurricane Jose, which is expected to take a track similar to that of Irma over the weekend, carrying it over some of the same hard-hit islands of Antigua, Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Martin and others.
