Recently we wrote about the “greening” of the shipping and aviation industries in our article Amber Lights for Green Shipping. The inaugural Greenport Congress Oceania is taking place this week at the Port of Newcastle from 15 to 17 February. This is the first time for it to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, bringing together port professionals, industry representatives and academia from around the world.
The conference provides decision makers from the port community – port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines, logistics operators – with a meeting place to both learn about and discuss the latest in sustainable development and environmental practice to enable them to effectively implement the changes needed to reduce their carbon footprint and to be more sensitive to environmental considerations.
Newcastle is the first port in Australia or New Zealand to become a member of the International EcoPorts network and has been working across the Pacific region to advocate for the benefits of the EcoPorts initiative.
